China's chrome ore resources are relatively poor, and according to the standard to meet demand, is a kind of scarce resource. The total ore reserves are 10.78 million tons, of which 53.6 percent are high grade ore. There are 56 chrome deposits in 13 provinces (autonomous regions), including Tibet, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Gansu. Tibet holds about half of the country's reserves. The chrome deposits in China are typical magmatic deposits related to ultrabasic rocks, most of which are ophiolite type and occur in ophiolite belt. Tibet Luobuza chrome ore and Xinjiang Sartuohai chrome ore and some others belong to this category. From the perspective of metallogenic age, the forming age of chrome ore in China is mainly Mesozoic and Cenozoic.
With the increasing consumption of chrome in China, chrome ore can no longer meet the needs of consumption. Improving the utilization rate of tailings and chrome-containing wastes can alleviate the shortage of chrome-containing resources in China to some extent. China is a major producer of stainless steel and a major consumer of stainless steel. Stainless steel contains 10.5% chromium on average. Stainless steel scrap is the preferred material for chromium metal recycling.
